Rain. Rain.  Go Away.  Or not.

It's raining.  Again.  As if we're in the middle of Noah's flood.  It's cooler too, not feeling the heat here and it's almost mid-June.  Two beautiful days on the weekend, some time on the bike and now Monday with rain.  If you didn't finish your lawn mowing this weekend, it's time to seriously consider adding pontoons to your mower.  I am.
I live in the country.  I grew up on a farm.  Rain is essential for crop nourishment, for human existence, for life.
Too much water causes flooding which can wash away crops, water-log ones flesh, drown the atmosphere with humidity.
Songs from many genres glorify and bemoan rain.  From the country singer Ronnie Milsap's "Smoky Mountain Rain" to pop artist Madonna's "Rain" to rock group Creedence Clearwater Revival's (CCR's) "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" to the Christian hymn "There Shall be Showers of Blessing" rain is clearly an important topic to humankind!  There are so many songs referring to 'rain' that I'm not even attempting to track and count them all -- but believe that every musical class has at least one if not many!
In the winter in my neck of the woods, people complain about the snow, ice, and cold.  In the summer, they complain about heat and humidity.  Oh, and in the spring, summer, and fall, they complain about: rain.  They complain if it rains on a parade, a picnic, a weekend off, when leaving work, if it floods.  They complain if it doesn't rain and their lawns start to turn brown, if they have to water their gardens themselves, if it's too hot and rain might cool off the atmosphere.  There seems to be no happy medium.
Are these neighbors, these acquaintances, these strangers happy with Anything?  Sometimes I wonder.
Our society has grown into a complaining, whiny, offended, blubbery mass of homo sapiens.  Note, I'm selecting an ethnicity, a religious group, a political party, a sexual preference, a gender breakdown, or anything else; I'm calling it as I see it.  Humankind wants to gripe.  Rain is a good excuse to gripe.  I'd wager a bet (at least a nickel because I'm cheap) that Someone is actually Offended by rain.  Why not?  We're all offended by something, and seemingly more and more, at least in my country of origin.....and I'm seeing trends of it globally.  Again, I'm an equal opportunity griper here:  If you're human, self-identify as human, or even have human DNA, I'm including you in the bucket - which, by the way, should be collecting rainwater but is illegal in some states and localities.  Wait til they figure out how to tax you on the rainfall at your residence, be it apartment or ranch!  Shhhh.....don't give Big Brother ideas, right?
Well, it's raining.  Like it or not, it's raining.  Here, it's raining.  Somewhere else on this planet of ours, someone is dying of thirst, someone is drowning in floodwaters.  And we'll all complain, cry, stomp our feet, and even ask that whoever's doing the rain dance to please cease and desist.
Could we complain about things we can change, please?  You know, try complaining about not having better land management and superfluous land management that causes arid land.  Then (here's a novel idea), try fixing our modern era screw-ups wherein we diverted too much water away from certain plots of land, wherein we built cities in and below flood plains.  Let's work as a team, humankind, and fix things.
I'm not a fan of the climate change talk, especially when you consider how many different 'experts' have predicted the end of the world due to climate change with deadlines that have come and gone several times over.  Now, don't get your panties in a bunch!  I believe in science every bit as much as I believe in God, heaven, and hell.  I believe one compliments the other -- really not hard to marry them if you are a person of faith.  I do believe, science is like medicine -- the practice thereof.  Considering that none of us lived during Adam and Eve's era to witness dinosaurs as part of the animals that God created AND considering that God is infinite, who's to say how long one biblical day at creation took in man's puny view of space and time?  It all works together if you let it.
I believe the earth 'breathes' if you will.  It has experienced ice age(s), flood(s), extinctions of global proportions.  Our home planet will experience those phenomena again in it's life cycle until it dies.  The earth evolves as does our sun.  Our sun is a star (scientific facts in case you missed grade-school science classes) and our sun, as said star, will eventually burn out.  Long before that happens (and No, I'm not predicting a date), it will create more heat and all the planets in our solar system will change in temperature.  There will be no changing that, folks.  The earth will heat up, water evaporate, and life as we know it will expire under the extreme conditions.  Fixing a hole in ozone won't stop it.  Not using plastics won't stop it.  Going organic or using all chemical preservatives won't stop it.  Producing oil or using solar power won't stop it.  Nothing in humankind's knowledge base will stop the sun from it's life cycle as a star that will burnout/flame-out one day.  It happens to other stars all the time -- our scientists who focus on the stars, the galaxies, the universe have witnessed other stars do the very same thing through their telescopes.
Our sun will die and so will planet earth, just like humans do.  Some of us go quietly, some of us go out in a blaze of glory, but the physical result is the same -- the body, the living organism dies.  The difference is that we are human, and if we believe in God, then we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that we have souls and souls do not die.  Various religions have differing views on how a human can reach heaven, nirvana, a place of peace and I'm not going down that road in this entry.  I know where my faith is (in case you missed it, I believe in Jesus Christ as my Savior and that when I die He will take my soul to heaven with God and those who have gone before me in faith) so I'm not in a panic over dying today or in 50 years.  I will die when it is my time and not a minute before, by some means wherein my life-sustaining organs stop functioning for the physical body.
So, I bet you're wondering how did a little essay on rain morph to a discussion on the death of stars and humans?
It's simple enough, so I'll try to explain it.  We're all going to die, humans, the stars, planets, none of us are immortal. Why then do we complain about the rain we have today, the snow we'll have in winter, the very things that go in a normal cycle of rotation?  Why?  They are beyond our control -- and human kind needs not to control everything in its domain.
Why do humans find the need to complain about most everything?  Why?  We're all in this together on this planet, why don't we rejoice in our existence and marvel at all that is around us, wonderfully created (by God if you believe, by happenstance if you don't).  We've got a pretty good gig going on here, folks:  roommates, planet-mates, the ability to reproduce, gorgeous colors of humanity, beautiful shades of animals and plants, earth that provides us gravity and a place on which to stand, water with which to nourish and travel.  We are so very blessed as humans, creatures sailing along in our galaxy and what do we do?  We complain.  About rain.  Seriously, people?
We complain about our neighbors, how we govern ourselves, what we eat, the weather, where we live, where others live, our jobs, our lack of jobs, our leaders, our followers, our friends (yes, even our friends), our clothes, our religions.  In short, we complain about everything.  Where does it end?  When do we stop?
Now I'm no tree-hugger, but I grew up on a farm and love all that nature has to offer.  I enjoy activities in our metro areas, but long for that grass under my feet rather than cement sidewalks.  I always say I'm too conservative for my liberal friends and too liberal for my conservative friends.  Through all that, I love humanity.  When you look at yourself in the mirror, do you ever think about the fascinating DNA that causes you to be who you are, how you function, and how you form thoughts?  Your neighbors have DNA too and it came from somewhere!  Somehow, we're all humans and distantly related.  So are animals and plants; DNA is a fascinating conglomeration of blueprints for living things.
Humans need to function as  a team, putting our DNA to good use rather than just wasting it on complaints about things like rain.  I firmly believe that if (not when) humans figure out how to work as team members for the betterment of all, then hopefully, maybe, just maybe, we'll savor the things we cannot change like rain, life, death, neighbors, and then..............in that good mood, if we want humanity and our living creatures not to die off, we'll find solutions, reaching for the stars that are younger with in habitable planets.  We must look to each other, having faith in the good, not deterred by storms (rain or sunspots) if we want to prevent ourselves from killing off everything on this planet prematurely.
If we say we are tolerant, then we Must Be Tolerant.  That doesn't mean we get to pick and choose what we tolerate.  It's all or nothing.  If you can't tolerate your neighbor because his/her skin color, political viewpoint, or sexual orientation differs from yours, then you can't claim be a tolerant person.  It just doesn't work that way.  If you don't comprehend that, then you need to spend some time reading your Merriam-Webster dictionary from high school.
If we know we cannot tolerate certain behaviors, views, then we need to work with our fellow humans to find an ethical compromise wherein we respect that we are each unique, but knowing that we do not have to become homogeneous.  (I thank God every day that we are not cloned and identical!)  Variety is the spice of life!  If we all thought alike, performed the same job, etc. we'd either be running around naked with no food, but great houses, or we'd be eating well but with no houses....I hope you get the idea.  We need to value our differences and learn to utilize them for the good of all.
No, I'm NOT promoting any political, socio-economic system in this entry today.  I'm not a fan of some of those 'equal systems' because too many times some still end up more equal than others and more people end up starving than they do under a system with competition.  I believe with healthy competition, hard work, human ingenuity, we, as the human collective, can still have a system wherein we feel productive both for ourselves and enjoy helping others without force.
Forcing someone to love us has never worked, why would forcing a political viewpoint work any better?  It wouldn't.  We need to reach across the aisle in our governments, reach out from our charitable organizations, across the fence to our neighbors, and work together.  We won't save the sun, we won't save the planet, BUT, we will enjoy our lives much better than it seems we do now.  Instead of pointing fingers, finding fault, and complaining about everything under the sun (including the rain), it's time that we put our heads and hearts together, lending umbrellas, raincoats, sump pumps, and opening doors.
Sure, it's still raining today, probably going to rain all night.  I have a choice:  complain about everything and everyone (and the weather) OR make the best of my indoor time, find projects that only can be accomplished when it's raining, and maybe, just maybe dance in the rain.  Who's ready to dance with me?

Racism

Definition of RACISM  per Merriam-Webster Dictionary online
 1 : a belief that race
is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and
that racial differences produce an inherent  superiority of a particular race
2 : racial prejudice
or discrimination
Racism.  Is it subjective or relative?  How do you define it?  What makes a definition correct and something that everyone can agree upon?  Do you agree with the above-cited definitions regarding racism?
I have been accused lately of being racist.  Am I?
I was told my recent posts on Facebook demonstrate my racism and show that it is coming out.
What do you think?  Please, visit my Facebook page, Kind Readers, and let me know if you think I am a racist?  Here is the link:

Rita Preston's Views
I'm wondering if the accuser meant that I was racially prejudiced instead of racist.  I do not believe one race is superior to another anymore than I believe that men are smarter than women, that blondes are dumber than folks with other hair colors, that brown-eyed folks are warmer than green-eyed folks, that college degrees make someone smarter than someone who has only a high school diploma, that little green men typify life on Mars, that if the sky is blue today it can never be grey with thunder clouds, that 2+2=5, or that the United States of America exists in the southern hemisphere on planet Earth.
I don't care what your eye color is;  I don't care what your skin color is;  I don't care what your education is.
I want a human being to act like a practical human being with common sense.  I want that same human being to be capable of doing the job for which he/she has been hired.  If that person is incapable and it was not discovered prior to hiring, then find a replacement and steer the unqualified person to the right position for him/her.
If preachers (here I refer to men and women of the cloth, those who preach a religion, etc.) want to preach the love of God and unity of mankind then they need to do that and live that.  Lately there are some prominent ministers spreading division in our country based on the color of the skin of someone who has committed acts such as manslaughter and murder.  It seems they make a gigantic public spectacle if a black person (for lack of a term which will suit every reader out there) has been harmed by someone of another ethnicity.  In the same venue, these preachers fall quiet when a black person (again, my apologies, I am not labeling; I am pointing out the pictures shown in the media) commits similar crimes against persons of non-black ethnic backgrounds.
I have been sharing this distinction and have been called to account for it as though I am being racist and promoting division.  I was further taken to account for having mentioned our illustrious POUSA as falling into the same category as a couple of those famous preachers.  True, he is not a minister of the Christian faith, to my knowledge (nor of any other religion of which I've been told); however, he is a leader of many people by having been elected POUSA.  By holding that rank, one must hold one's self up rather than further divide people -- was he not originally elected for hope and change........to bring unity?  I see more division in this country today than prior to his election.  Why is that?
I know, I (a small country community numbers person with a passion for God, Country, Family, and many other things, including writing) do not wish for division, nor do I wish for utopia.  I wish for common sense, equal rights, equal application of the laws, and equal representation in our media.  All of these items are lacking greatly these days.
Journalism and news reporting should follow their natural course.  If one wishes to editorialize, start your own editorial column or blog.   Editorializing, spouting one's own opinion, spewing forth drama from various political camps as diversions to actual news are bordering on fraudulent journalism.
My blog clearly states that these are my thoughts, my opinions, and my views.  I do my best to write on topics of current importance, based on news articles I have read, or little snippets of fodder I see along the internet.  Usually, not always.  Some of them make for great debate, some for serious argument, and some, I hope, for serious contemplation.
To be called racist when I describe someone based on his/her skin tone or any other physical feature and in the same conversation wherein I demand equal justice, equal representation, equal time or any other frame of equality is simply ironic.  If we are going to attempt to be that "politically correct" in this country, we have already lost our individuality along with our equality.   (I shall save the discussion of how inhumane and politically incorrect political correctness actually is for another day.)

If you want equality, it has to be equality across the board, you can't pick and choose when to be equal and when not to be equal.  When you dictate your equality, you border on some being more equal than others and that my friends rings reminiscent of communism and/or socialism.  Either we are equal or we are not.  Our Constitution says we are equal.  Don't call me names or label me when I am pointing out inequalities.
I am not racist because I do not like someone who plays at being in charge and can't see his ideas to fruition because he cannot 'work and play well with others.'  If he cannot fulfill the duties of the job, he shouldn't have the job.  If one cannot glean the cooperation of others, there is usually a reason.  Sadly, some may not like the color of his skin, some may not like the look in his eyes, or the way he wears his neckties, but for any POUSA, he needs to be able to work and play well with others if he wants his plans and dreams for his country to be put into a good course of action.

At the present time, I do not work in any job position or volunteer position which puts me into a work relationship with the POUSA so I am not affecting his ability to do his job in the slightest.  I have been labeled a racist because I don't care for him and the way he's been doing his job.  As I have stated previously, I don't care if he's purple as long as he can do the job.
Am I prejudiced?  Nope.  If you are straight up with me as a human being, I will be straight up with you.  If you are human and pretend to be a sheep, now we might have a problem.  If you are a sheep and pretend to be human, again, we might have a problem (most likely in communication).  Be who you are, give a damn about my country if you're going to lead it.  If you're going to lead my country, then lead, don't play back door games, stand up and be accountable when things go wrong below you.  A company is only as good as its leadership; same for the country.  If you cannot step up to the plate when it counts (e.g. an embassy under attack and Americans killed on your watch), then you should not have taken the job.
No one leaves the Oval Office a younger person; every single one of them has shown much aging by the time he has left office.  It is no easy job if given half the time it deserves and requires.
Am I prejudiced against our currently seated president?  In one way:  he is not doing well at the job; he is hindering and hurting our economy and morale in my opinion.  No, I'm not citing statistics here, I am basing this opinion on the everyday life I see in America:  families and individuals struggling to make ends meet, to hold on to their homes if they haven't lost them already, businesses cutting corners to stay afloat, automobile prices that equal the prices of small houses (auto manufacturers should be ashamed of their pricing; after all,  they got bailout money so they can stay afloat), rising costs of living that are climbing faster and faster while wages are stagnant, a sequester in place but lavish parties still thrown at the White House, a president who takes his vacations even though there is a sequester, a congress and senate that don't give up summer recess to set a good example and families who have not been able to afford vacations in many years, even a government shutdown because the powers-that-be don't work and play well together.
Am I prejudiced against our congressmen and senators?  In one way:  they aren't doing their jobs well either.  (See paragraph immediately prior to this one.)
Am I racist?  NO!!
Am I prejudiced?  Maybe.  What am I prejudiced against?  Leaders of government, pastors/ministers/religious leaders who fall far short of their calling and fail the people they've chosen to lead, some even acting racist against the people they were elected to lead.
Interesting article poking fun at liberals by conservatives:  http://youngcons.com/the-7-things-liberals-actually-mean-when-they-call-somebody-racist/  Is it poking fun or does it lend credibility to how many in our country are behaving?
Are YOU racist?  Are YOU prejudiced?  If so, in what way or ways?

Lamb or Lion

3/1/2014

Do you dread March, the ides of March, the possibility that spring may not arrive on its appointed date in March?
The old thought of March arriving like a lamb meant that it would end like a lion.  Likewise, if arrives like a lion, it will exit like a lamb.
Wouldn't you rather have it arrive like a lion and leave like a lamb in the freshness of spring and all that is reborn?
Today is a mystery.  Calm weather, warmer temps in my locale, clear roadways, and an approaching winter storm named Titan.  Titan.

(The following  definition courtesy of http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary)
ti·tan noun \ˈtī-tən\ Titan : one of a family of giants in Greek mythology
: an extremely large and powerful person, company, etc.
Full Definition of TITAN1 capitalized :  any of a family of giants in Greek mythology born of Uranus and Gaea and ruling the earth until overthrown by the Olympian gods 2 :  one that is gigantic in size or power :  one that stands out for greatness of achievement

Titan is on its way to parts of the USA.  Frightened of this giant?  Nope.  Not this chic.  Storms happen.  Life happens.  It goes on.  Weather occurs.  We deal with it.  If you're used to weather changes, you're prepared.  If you live in a utopian climate-controlled bubble somewhere, then this storm might frighten you.  Good luck.

What I'm wondering, since Titan was predicted to arrive tonight, the evening of March 1st, does that mean March is entering like a giant lion and the end of the month will have sweet innocent lamb-like weather?
Where does one draw the line on time-held hearsay of weather predictions?  Most of today has been calm.  What if Titan waits to arrive until March 2nd?  Does that count as the beginning of the month?

What does all this matter?  Lions.  Lambs.  Titans.  Giants.  Weather.
Life happens with or without lion/lamb-like weather.  Life goes on.

Big things happen.  Small things happen.  Do we take stock of the big and the little things in life?  The rescue of your neighbor's when their house caught fire?  The whisper in your ear of your child's  scary nightmare with arms tight around your neck?  The first spring flower you spot by your door or along the highway on your way to work?  The reality of the store being sold out of toilet paper and milk/water just before a big storm hits?

Are you prepared for the storms?  Are you prepared for the renewed sensation of good days?  Are you prepared for changes in your life?  Are you ready for children in your family?  Are you ready for divorce?  Are you battening hatches against political oppression?  Are you stocking up for a lack of electricity and heat?  Are ready to grow up and get a job?  Are you ready to say 'good-bye' to your parents, a child, a grandchild?

Are you, are any of us ever ready for big storms and small changes?  We try to be.  We think we are.
In reality, no one human person is ever ready for such changes.  We can prepare.  We can stock up.  We can think it through.  Truly, though, the day of change arrives and we want one more second of sunshine, one more breath, one more second being single, another year of school, and so on.

The only thing that makes us ready is stepping into the moment.  We face that moment and rise to the occasion.  Perhaps we do not succeed as we thought we would,  or perhaps we second-guess our preparations, our words, our decisions.
Either way, the moment arrives like a winter storm, at a given moment in time that we cannot change.  It is up to each of us to weather the storm, to adapt, to become who we are meant to be.

Lion or lamb?  Which will you be?  A giant, prepared and strong, or a lamb,
gentle and adapting?

Didn't know you could be likened to a winter storm, did you?  Your life compared to the seasons?  Oh sure, we've all heard about May-December romances and the winter of our lives when we get 'old,' but from my humble perspective, our lives mirror the weather, the climate, the change of seasons.  Do we mature, do we wither?  Do we blossom?  Do we allow ourselves to create fruitful lives?

We make choices everyday.  The weather happens.  Do we live as the weather, just letting life happen or do we utilize our ability to make changes in our personal weather patterns?

Do we allow ourselves to walk as thunderclouds, scaring those around us or do we walk in the light, spreading the seeds of good will to strangers as well as those we hold dear.

Our personal weather patterns are up to us.  Titan-like lions or Lamb-like souls......or lambs who know when to growl like lions?  Are you a giant of person?  The choice is yours.  Human life is short and fragile.  Make the best of it.  Shout your love like a lion and swallow your anger like a lamb.  Choose wisely.  You won't get a do-over on those final good-byes.

Simply Sequester?

6/20/2013

From Merriam-Webster, online dictionary:
SEQUESTER:
"1se·ques·ter transitive verb \si-ˈkwes-tər\se·ques·teredse·ques·ter·ing
Definition of SEQUESTER1a : to set apart : segregate <sequester a jury> b : seclude, withdraw <widely spaced homes are forbiddingly grand and sequestered — Don Asher> 2a : to seize especially by a writ of sequestration b : to place (property) in custody especially in sequestration 3 : to hold (as a metallic ion) in solution usually by inclusion in an appropriate coordination complex"
It seems that to sequester is to withdraw, to seclude, to segregate, to seize, to hold, to place in custody.

Earlier this year, our President declared a national sequester.   Services would be cut.  Indeed, services have been cut, but Americans being who we are, are muddling on through. I do see anger over this action.

The President and his family have been continuing to hold grand celebrity-attended parties.  The President's wife and children accompanied him to Ireland this past week for a summit (the First Lady and daughters visiting ancestral areas and sight-seeing on our tax-dollars since they require the same security accorded the President).  I read recently that 30 rooms were in use at the hotel where the First Lady and girls stayed, 30 rooms?!?!  Support staff and security.  Who paid for this?  We, the American people, who have been "sequestered."

I don't know about you, but I  would love to travel to Ireland and visit my ancestral areas of interest.  I bet my trip would be far less expensive since I don't need security and support staff.  I am my own person.  Would be nice to have family with me, but not support staff.

I am curious as to who is withdrawn, who is secluded, who is segregated, who has been seized, who is being held, who is in custody by our President's order of sequestration?  Are we, the American people, being held and in custody?  Has the President withdrawn and segregated himself from his fellow Americans, has he withdrawn from the people?  I ask these questions because they weigh heavily on my mind.

If we, the American people, are to be sequestered, then should not ALL of us be cutting back?  If we are segregated, should we not be separated from other countries and not be sending them weapons and aid?  How are we sequestered?  It would seem we cut our own people, but for the rest of the world, we shall continue to support them and help them.  We have become our own captives.

I much prefer to sequester myself, particularly when I've lost a love one.  Withdraw into myself for a time to nurse my hurts.  I cannot imagine sequestering myself with the intent to allow harm to come to those I love.

I guess definitions are subject to an individual's interpretation.  If you're the President of the United States of America, you can enact executive powers to sequester your people from their government jobs, from various programs, while opening your wallet to those who are not Americans.  If you're this writer, sequestration is a matter of privacy (e.g a jury in deliberations or a person who needs to nurse an emotional wound), and a withholding of emotions to others.

How do you, dear readers, interpret the word "sequester?"

Let's see.........15 days into this 'new' year.  Have you broken those resolutions yet?

I haven't broken a single resolution!  Yes, I am bragging!  It's been soooo easy!  Why, you may ask?  I didn't make any resolutions!!  Don't make 'em, ya can't break 'em!

Instead of the annual fuss over resolution, I truly want to just work on being a better person, every day, every year.  Some years I do better than others.  Some years I fail horribly.

I don't need the stress of imposing my own 'laws' on myself.  Our society does enough of that.   The media screams that we should be thin, that we should never offend (even if we disagree with others), that we should drive new fancy cars, that we should buy the latest technological gadgets, that we should recycle (yet throw out the tarnished in favor of new and shiny).

All these things make me wonder about our aging population, growing in size due to the retiring Baby Boomer generation.  I read in the news about the 45-year old twins in Europe who were recently euthanized because they were already deaf and potentially going blind; they felt they could not be useful?  What is the matter with this world?

Why do we no longer value life?  Our country seems to protect the right to kill the unborn child, yet we don't put guards at our schools to protect our living children.   When will our elderly become truly disposable commodities?  With the introduction of the new healthcare system, the day is not far away I fear.

People are not inanimate items to be discarded or recycled.  We have life, we have value beyond measure.  We don't need resolutions, we need to have self-esteem.  Value ourselves, value each other.
