2016 Ride for Freedom with 24-Hour POW/MIA Vigil

13 years now. 13 years I've been there in some way. The creators of the local vigil have been holding said vigil for 29 years and the ride for 19 years. I'm still a kid when you look at those numbers.

When you look at the numbers of Missing in Action and Prisoners of War just from WWII through present day, I'm a kid. Maybe we all are kids.

We certainly sent our kids off to war. The boys came home as men, the girls as women, and the others......You mean there are others? Yes, the others. The others. The other kids we sent to war. They didn't come home. We left them there, in prisons captured by the enemies, missing and not found while on duty, lost at sea, who knows; BUT, we left them there.

No, not you and I. Not even their best buddy in the fox hole. You might think he's the one to blame, but he isn't. Not when your buddy takes the shot that kills within a minute and your friend is conscious maybe, just maybe long enough, to ask you to tell his wife he loves her and he's sorry...... And you're still taking fire and the command is to Move Out and there's no time to take the dead because you're being overrun. If they're lucky, you grab the living wounded over a shoulder as you run, pausing long enough to turn and fire several volleys at the enemy approaching. There is no time to think, just fight and run, try to maintain your ground, move forward again, the sweat dripping from your forehead, running down your rib-cage, your feet soaked from weeks in swampy jungles or days in dessert induced sweat with no dry socks in sight. You fight and you run and finally, there is a silence. All around you, silence. You look around and more of your platoon is on the ground, and behind you, so is the enemy. A few of your company is staggering around and a radio begins to crackle as the radioman, still alive, calls for a chopper to airlift you out, you and the wounded man on your back. You didn't know it at the time, but that wasn't all sweat you felt running down your forehead and your ribs. You were hit with shrapnel in the head and that was your own blood you'd wiped away. That wetness on your ribs? That was your sweat mixed with the young man's blood from his chest wound running down over your shoulder. You two share a chopper and as you start to fade into unconsciousness, you remember your buddy.....your buddy, in the foxhole, who loves his wife and is sorry he's not going home........

Our government left them there. They didn't let these boys-who-became-men go back and get their buddies, didn't let them go back and search for the ones on special missions who were missing, didn't let them go break out the ones captured and made into prisoners of war, didn't let them go look for any of them. It wasn't the individual soldier, airman, marine, guardsman, who left our people behind, it is our government.

Once per year our nation has a day set aside to remember our Prisoners of War and Missing in Action. It is called National POW/MIA Day and is scheduled for the third (3rd) Friday of every September. To this day, multitudes do not know of this day or why it exists. It is not a federal holiday. How can you call such a remembrance a holiday anyway? Nonetheless, it should be a required day off, for schools, for workers, and all non-life-essential occupations with large community services to make a loud voice that we want our service people HOME, dead or alive. Obviously, we want them alive, but if the worst happens, give our loved ones the dignity of bringing them home to their families and friends. Give their families that closure. Our children must be taught about those left behind.

Our government must do a better job of finding our missing and our foreign-held prisoners. Do not negotiate and make our country weak. Just find them and bring them home with strength, dignity, and honor of the US military and the countrymen and women who support them.

Too many people in this country are unaware of our missing and our prisoners and that must change! We have WWII veterans still alive in the U.S., does it not stand to reason, they can still be alive somewhere abroad? Clearly, the same applies to Korean and Vietnam veterans and more recent wars.

When the list of numbers appears below, a comparison will be provided so that you may have a better understanding of how many people have been left behind by our, by your, government.

This year's local ride brought many tears to my eyes, more so than some years. It varies for me. The first year, I think I cried the entire ride. Some years there are many tears, some years I just feel quiet and snap my photos as we go along without a blurry focus. How can you not cry when you see the people committed to raising a voice, to those who stand along the ride route holding flags, signs of support, and yelling, “Thank you!”? How can you not cry when think that the noise you make on that motorcycle and the quietness you embrace at the candle-light vigil, are both there to shout a mighty thunder to our government that we must NEVER FORGET and that we must BRING THEM HOME. The silence in the night at a vigil can be as deafening as the roar of hundreds of motorcycles on a ride. The goal of both is the same. NEVER FORGET.

Imagine if your husband, father, son, mother, daughter, sister, brother, uncle, aunt, had gone to war to fight for your freedom or the freedom of someone devastatingly oppressed......and he or she never came home? Imagine if you never knew why? They just disappeared....and your government can't or won't tell you why. Imagine. Look at these people today and feel blessed they are in your home, in your life, that they came home, and that they continue to come home. There are 82,666 families out there who do not have that luxury. They still wait.

82,666 unaccounted for persons from “recent” wars – do you comprehend that number? The U.S. Cities of Warwick, RI; Sioux City, Iowa; Ogden, UT; Tracy, CA; and Alhambra, CA all have populations ranging from 82,672 to 83,089 respectively. The number of Unaccounted-For-Persons just from WWII to present equals a modern day city population, a city you have heard of, not just a small town! We/our government/the USA have left behind the equivalent to the population of an entire city. This is not acceptable.

Why do we do ride and hold vigil? – Because those who have no voices, must be heard. Those 82,666 families deserve closure. Be a voice. Show support. Teach a child. Write to your congressmen and senators. Ask how you can help. Support your troops and local veterans organizations. Tell a veteran or active duty person “thank you” when you see them. (They won't bite, honest.) They fought for you. Fight for those they didn't get to bring home.

April Showers......spring cleaning....primary elections.....new life......religious holidays......Earth Day......mud......high school proms......planting gardens........picnics......summer.....

What do we 'older' folks think of as spring arrives?  What do 'kids' think of during this same season?
In a way, I surmise we all share similar thoughts even if in different scenarios, much like my tulips which share the same lawn yet bloom in different colors.

Indulge me for a moment, as you so often do, take the scenario of spring a bit further than my tulip bed.  Our beloved country:  different colors, shades, viewpoints, yet we are the United States of America.  We forget that sometimes and hyper-focus on the colors within, on the differing viewpoints, the negative instead of the good.  If we could just savor the shades of our fellow American stems and roots and delight in the way we bloom in the same lawn, wouldn't it be just grand?

I may not always agree with the way you blow in the breeze or let your petals fall, but that is your life, not mine.   By the same token, if your bulb develops disease, hopefully we can cure it and ease your suffering.  Further yet, if your bulb turns into a parasite choking the life out of all the others in the lawn, then we must, for the preservation of the lawn and all life therein, find a way to contain and make safe the parasite rather than encouraging parasitic behavior. 

I can only imagine some eyes rolling by now and challenging the paragraph preceding this one.  What am I saying?  I am saying:  Encourage beauty, Encourage life, Encourage health.  Discourage laziness, Discourage ugliness of heart, Discourage abuse of others.  Nothing more, nothing less.  Don't try to read between the lines further than what I just stated. 

Bloom where you are planted.  If the wind moves you along, then prepare for an adventure.  If it is your calling to care for others, do so.  If it is your calling to lead and make the world a safer better place in which to live, do so.  If it is your calling to entertain, do so.  For heaven's sake, above all else, LIVE.  LOVE.  LAUGH.  If you happen to live in the good ol' US of A, then be a GOOD CITIZEN and VOTE.  THINK.  PARTICIPATE.

As a good citizen, if you need to spring clean by voting some out of office, then do so.  If you need to plant a garden of fresh-thinking folks in political office, do so.  If you need to wash the mud out of the government's back porch and living room, do so.  If you need to celebrate rebirth and your religion, do so, but respect others' right to do so as well.  If you need to dress up your young folks celebrating youthful activities, do so, but let them live; do not live through them.  Live your life and teach them to live theirs.  Please.

Lamb or Lion

Do you dread March, the ides of March, the possibility that spring may not arrive on its appointed date in March?
The old thought of March arriving like a lamb meant that it would end like a lion.  Likewise, if arrives like a lion, it will exit like a lamb. 
Wouldn't you rather have it arrive like a lion and leave like a lamb in the freshness of spring and all that is reborn?
Today is a mystery.  Calm weather, warmer temps in my locale, clear roadways, and an approaching winter storm named Titan.  Titan.

Titan is on its way to parts of the USA.  Frightened of this giant?  Nope.  Not this chic.  Storms happen.  Life happens.  It goes on.  Weather occurs.  We deal with it.  If you're used to weather changes, you're prepared.  If you live in a utopian climate-controlled bubble somewhere, then this storm might frighten you.  Good luck.

What I'm wondering, since Titan was predicted to arrive tonight, the evening of March 1st, does that mean March is entering like a giant lion and the end of the month will have sweet innocent lamb-like weather?
   Where does one draw the line on time-held hearsay of weather predictions?  Most of today has been calm.  What if Titan waits to arrive until March 2nd?  Does that count as the beginning of the month?

What does all this matter?  Lions.  Lambs.  Titans.  Giants.  Weather. 
Life happens with or without lion/lamb-like weather.  Life goes on.

Big things happen.  Small things happen.  Do we take stock of the big and the little things in life?  The rescue of your neighbor's when their house caught fire?  The whisper in your ear of your child's  scary nightmare with arms tight around your neck?  The first spring flower you spot by your door or along the highway on your way to work?  The reality of the store being sold out of toilet paper and milk/water just before a big storm hits?
 

Are you prepared for the storms?  Are you prepared for the renewed sensation of good days?  Are you prepared for changes in your life?  Are you ready for children in your family?  Are you ready for divorce?  Are you battening hatches against political oppression?  Are you stocking up for a lack of electricity and heat?  Are ready to grow up and get a job?  Are you ready to say 'good-bye' to your parents, a child, a grandchild? 

Are you, are any of us ever ready for big storms and small changes?  We try to be.  We think we are. 
In reality, no one human person is ever ready for such changes.  We can prepare.  We can stock up.  We can think it through.  Truly, though, the day of change arrives and we want one more second of sunshine, one more breath, one more second being single, another year of school, and so on. 

The only thing that makes us ready is stepping into the moment.  We face that moment and rise to the occasion.  Perhaps we do not succeed as we thought we would,  or perhaps we second-guess our preparations, our words, our decisions. 
Either way, the moment arrives like a winter storm, at a given moment in time that we cannot change.  It is up to each of us to weather the storm, to adapt, to become who we are meant to be. 

Lion or lamb?  Which will you be?  A giant, prepared and strong, or a lamb,
gentle and adapting? 

Didn't know you could be likened to a winter storm, did you?  Your life compared to the seasons?  Oh sure, we've all heard about May-December romances and the winter of our lives when we get 'old,' but from my humble perspective, our lives mirror the weather, the climate, the change of seasons.  Do we mature, do we wither?  Do we blossom?  Do we allow ourselves to create fruitful lives?

We make choices everyday.  The weather happens.  Do we live as the weather, just letting life happen or do we utilize our ability to make changes in our personal weather patterns? 

Do we allow ourselves to walk as thunderclouds, scaring those around us or do we walk in the light, spreading the seeds of good will to strangers as well as those we hold dear.

Our personal weather patterns are up to us.  Titan-like lions or Lamb-like souls......or lambs who know when to growl like lions?  Are you a giant of person?  The choice is yours.  Human life is short and fragile.  Make the best of it.  Shout your love like a lion and swallow your anger like a lamb.  Choose wisely.  You won't get a do-over on those final good-byes.

Government Shutdown

Yep, they did it folks.   The House, the Senate, The President.  They shutdown sections of the federal government. 
I've been watching the mainstream media, from CNN to FOX.  I've been watching Facebook comments and links.  I've been reading and listening. 
Anger, frustration, worry, fear, and a lot of finger-pointing.
So, who is to blame?  Here is my take on who is to blame and how much fault do they actually carry?
The President,  you bet!  He's the top dog and in any business, the buck stops at the top (or should).  He gave the actual order to shut it down.
The Senate, of course!  It is controlled by the Democratic Party, which seems hell-bent on being against anything the Republican Party proposes.
The House, absolutely!  It is controlled by the Republican Party, which seems hell-bent on being against anything the Democratic Party proposes.
The American people?  Beyond a shadow of a doubt!!  WE, the American People, are to blame for this shutdown.  We, by whichever statistical margin you wish to cite, voted these people into office.  WE BLEW IT.  And, in our society today, we don't want anyone to point that out.  We want to blame someone else for every problem and ailment that comes down the pike.  It isn't our fault, our actions are a results of someone provoking us, hurting us, etc.....EXCEPT....................  Except what???  That is wrong.  We are accountable for our actions and how we react to those around us.  WE ARE.  Not others.
We voted those disagreeable, arguing, belligerent, stuck-in-their-party-rut, uncompromising, salary-guaranteed, buffoons into office.  We believed every word when we voted. 
Maybe some of us just believed a good set of lies disguised as pretty promises, wrapped up for us to infer that they were actually working for our healthy well-being, our ability to provide for ourselves, our ability to get others to provide for us.  Did you just catch that? 
Are we wanting to provide for ourselves or wanting everyone else to take care of us?  Did that impact your voting?  Who would give you the most??
And now, some are screaming for pity because those who get the entitlements (which, are misnamed, since they are not earned at all, they are, in fact, handouts), may not be receiving them with the government shutdown.  But,

  • WHO voted for people who would just keep handing out? 
  • Who voted for those who would create jobs so we could feed ourselves?
  • Who voted for a healthcare plan which had not even been read and studied before it was approved?
  • Who voted to fund those who lay around in families for generations collecting government checks (i.e., taxpayer money) and food stamps, etc.?
  • Who voted for abortion (i.e. the killing of unborn children)?  Who argues when unborn children are murdered by the murdering of their pregnant mothers -- and the file charges against a killer who killed an unborn baby?
  • Who vetoed an immense project known as the Keystone Pipeline which would have created jobs and used our own natural resources instead of paying for exorbitant foreign oil?
  • Who voted to keep the minimum wage stagnant?
  • Who voted for our 'leaders?'
WE, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, DID.  If you voted for the leaders, you voted for all these things.  You and I caused this mess and we are starting to pay dearly for it.  We can't blame Canada.  We can't blame the European Union or China or Mexico.  WE VOTED for these buffoons who, by law, continue to collect their paychecks while our government is shut down.  (Granted, some are refusing their checks and some are donating checks during the shutdown to charity, but overall, they will receive their checks and pay tax on them no matter what they do with them, because, by law, they get paid.)
WE, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, SHUT DOWN OUR GOVERNMENT.  WE VOTED THESE SO-CALLED LEADERS INTO OFFICE - consisting of Democrats, Republicans, and a few others.  WE DID THIS. 
Quit finger-pointing.  Accept responsibility and encourage your representatives, your senators, and your president to start listening. 
Don't let skewed surveys, polls, and statistics, along with media-slanted PR pushed ideas taint your intelligent ability to discern what is right, what is wrong, and who has to be impeached, voted out, and recalled.  In fact, while you're at it, let the media know we want factual reporting without bias and the personal slants of the reporters.  We want stories that stick to the facts and only the facts.   
Quit allowing yourselves to be entertained by the press.  Their job is to report facts, not entertain.
Our job is to use the brains God gave us.  We quit using them a long long time ago and it's time to quit babying ourselves and grow-up. 
We caused this mess.  We can stop it.  It will not happen overnight.  Have you ever watched a house that has been subject to a natural disaster?  Repairs do not happen overnight and sometimes the building has to be brought down to its bare foundation with new strong timbers placed.

To quote Woody Guthrie's song, "This land is your land, this land is my land."  WE, who come from so many different ethnic backgrounds, need to work for our fellow man as well as ourselves. 
Our constitution guarantees each of us life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  It does not promise us utopia; it allows each individual to pursue whatever his or happiness goal is.  It allows us our lives and our liberty.  That is tantamount to granting us the ability to work and provide for ourselves, it does not say giving it all to those who don't want to work.  It seems today that some (many) in our society find their pursuit of happiness to be pushing for laws so that those who do work will provide for those who do not.  I do not believe that is what our hard-working founders had in mind; they did not create a welfare state.  They created the best governing system the world has ever seen.  Today we are on the verge of destroying even the principles upon which this system was founded.
If you love where you live, if you love your country, if you love yourself, this is going to take a lot of hard work by ALL of us.  WE CAN FIX OUR COUNTRY.

Simply Sequester?

Definition of SEQUESTER1a : to set apart : segregate <sequester a jury> b : seclude, withdraw <widely spaced homes are forbiddingly grand and sequestered — Don Asher> 2a : to seize especially by a writ of sequestration b : to place (property) in custody especially in sequestration 3 : to hold (as a metallic ion) in solution usually by inclusion in an appropriate coordination complex"
It seems that to sequester is to withdraw, to seclude, to segregate, to seize, to hold, to place in custody. 

Earlier this year, our President declared a national sequester.   Services would be cut.  Indeed, services have been cut, but Americans being who we are, are muddling on through. I do see anger over this action. 

The President and his family have been continuing to hold grand celebrity-attended parties.  The President's wife and children accompanied him to Ireland this past week for a summit (the First Lady and daughters visiting ancestral areas and sight-seeing on our tax-dollars since they require the same security accorded the President).  I read recently that 30 rooms were in use at the hotel where the First Lady and girls stayed, 30 rooms?!?!  Support staff and security.  Who paid for this?  We, the American people, who have been "sequestered." 

I don't know about you, but I  would love to travel to Ireland and visit my ancestral areas of interest.  I bet my trip would be far less expensive since I don't need security and support staff.  I am my own person.  Would be nice to have family with me, but not support staff. 

I am curious as to who is withdrawn, who is secluded, who is segregated, who has been seized, who is being held, who is in custody by our President's order of sequestration?  Are we, the American people, being held and in custody?  Has the President withdrawn and segregated himself from his fellow Americans, has he withdrawn from the people?  I ask these questions because they weigh heavily on my mind. 

If we, the American people, are to be sequestered, then should not ALL of us be cutting back?  If we are segregated, should we not be separated from other countries and not be sending them weapons and aid?  How are we sequestered?  It would seem we cut our own people, but for the rest of the world, we shall continue to support them and help them.  We have become our own captives. 

I much prefer to sequester myself, particularly when I've lost a love one.  Withdraw into myself for a time to nurse my hurts.  I cannot imagine sequestering myself with the intent to allow harm to come to those I love. 

I guess definitions are subject to an individual's interpretation.  If you're the President of the United States of America, you can enact executive powers to sequester your people from their government jobs, from various programs, while opening your wallet to those who are not Americans.  If you're this writer, sequestration is a matter of privacy (e.g a jury in deliberations or a person who needs to nurse an emotional wound), and a withholding of emotions to others. 

How do you, dear readers, interpret the word "sequester?"
